Gorby is an app designed to facilitate smoking cessation through the use of the Gorb-E wearable. With it’s personalized design and ability to connect users throughout their individual journeys users will feel more in control of their decision to quit.

With the sudden resurgence of smoking rates in younger generations, we decided to create a product based solution to combat this influx of addiction. The biggest hindrance for quitting, which we directly wanted to address, were triggers that caused potential for relapse. These triggers, patterns, emotional, environmental, and withdrawal all compounded to become a user’s greatest nightmare, as they served as persistent reminders for the thing they craved most: nicotine. Our product is a wearable device that works in tandem with our application to implement a system of empathic support and accountability. Our device would be gathering insights on our user’s physiological states to better help them understand their unique triggers In their day to day life. It also allows users to manually push a button on the device, which is then documented in-app, to make note of any triggers they specifically want the app to identify. In the app they can look over their insight log and log any new triggers that were detected by the device, through their change in heart beat or skin conductance. With Gorby, users would no longer have to wonder whether they would be successful in their decision to quit smoking. Every aspect of the Gorby app was designed with the user in mind, while focusing on the most vital facet of recovery: empathy. Our research found that the most effective methods of sobriety relied on the users being allowed to empathize with other users or peers who held them accountable.
