'Mantras' is a pattern collection that reflects on the intrapersonal effects of lockdowns and the pandemic in general. Using my diaries as a starting point, I assigned a word to describe each week from March 2020 until March 2021. All of these begin with the prefix ‘re’ as a nod to the repetitive nature of both the patterns and people’s lives during quarantine.
I chose calligraphy as a way to turn these words into an exploration of patterns, type and legibility, as well as a personal tool to process the past year. These non-legible patterns come together as an experimental calligraphy scroll that serves as a subjective timeline of these 52 weeks.
