ASI Cal Poly Website Redesign

by Ed Marshall

Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a student driven, non-profit auxiliary organization of California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, committed to providing programs, services, and facilities that enhance and develop the student learning experience. ASI came to Matchfire to complete an overhaul of their website which provides critical functionality for students across campus, represents multiple departments and programs within ASI, and uses multiple data sources, technologies, and platforms. The goals of the website included a consistent, simplified user experience for visitors, and improved workflow for ASI staff, allowing for easy content and design updates.

The website features a mega-menu style navigation to allow users to quickly see the various sections of the site without superfluous clicks. This menu style also includes a “Popular Links” drop-down that can be updated based on time of year in order for users to easily access the most common pages, forms, and documents. Based on the Gen-Z user demographics and their tendency for relying heavily on websites’ search functionality, we developed a robust site search with the ability to adjust the weight of content on the backend in order to guide users to the most relevant content. Additionally, events and fitness calendars were reengineered and redesigned that feature dynamic filtering and an enhanced reservation flow.

The visual aesthetic of the website maintains a clean and streamlined appearance while allowing for opportunities to showcase fun color and personality through the use of custom collage art and background textures. Additional color is introduced through hover states, specialty buttons and decorative line elements used in various card components.

The new ASI website was successfully launched late spring 2020.
