Echo of the Urals - 9 animated stories about finno-ugric women and men is a unique book that includes animations which are made specially for Estonian National Museum’s permanent exhibition „Echo of the Urals. These stories are based on Northern Finno-Ugric women and men mysterious relationships.

The idea behind “Echo of the Urals” collection was to gather all exhibition stories and animations inside one book in 5 different languages. Our task was to create a book with unique, natural and historic feeling that supports exhibition concept and story.

Challenge
Our task was to come up with the idea for the book design that stands out together with the highly recognised exhibition ‘Echo of the Urals’. The book needed to be cool, unique and tell Finno-Ugric stories in simple and understandable way. Also it had to have a feeling that it is a part of the exhibition and can exist separately at the same time.

Process
In order to link the book with the exhibition, we used its main colours, elements and minimal style. We decided to use letterpress signs on top of the cover that describes each story. Handmade open spine blinding purpose was to add natural touch and the blue thread links with the main colour of the exhibition.
In addition we had to find the best solution to storage the video animations. To make it more user friendly, we share them on a USB stick. Inside the lid we created a pocket to keep it safe together with the book. The memory stick itself can be conveniently pulled out with the sheet which can be also...
