The school-to-prison pipeline is aided by a lack of empathy in current school discipline systems. Suspension removes students from the place they are meant to learn, leading to increased disciplinary problems later on. Restorative Justice aims to improve the cycle. However, this method relies heavily on students’ verbal and communication abilities, potentially inhibiting effective problem-solving. Token is a tactile facilitation tool for collaborative problem- solving between authority figures and students. This system fosters a change in students’ behavior and implements empathy into the institutional discipline system through three steps: identifying the situation and people involved, perspective-taking using emojis, and goal setting. The tactility of the toolkit enables distributed cognition, simplifying the communication process, and allowing for increased problem-solving. The goal of these restorative conversations is to build a growth mindset within students, encouraging students to take control of their future and reduce disciplinary incidents.
