With the rise of digital music streaming, and thus the parallel decline of physical music sales, indie bands rely on touring and live performance as their main source of profit. Indie musicians juggle between numerous platforms in order to research desired venues and build connections with artists in new cities while on tour. With the amount of data now available through social networks and streaming platforms, it is easier to gain an understanding of potential connections within local musician scenes. Current maintains the essence of the DIY musician scene by supporting tours, while providing a resource for independent musicians to understand their network across the country. Current is a mobile and desktop app that allows artists to connect to one another, build tours easily, and review venues across the country. Current is designed for independent musicians to connect with one another on tour, and find venues in new cities according to their preferences, all powered by machine learning. We have taken the spirit of rock zines like the iconic Maximum Rock and Roll and introduced it to the age of the cloud. Through use of a hybrid content and collaborative filtering recommendation algorithm, Current is able to provide custom recommendations to musicians, based on key variables like the music streaming profiles they use, social media accounts, reviews of venues, and location. These variables generate key signals that inform our AI, and thus the recommendations to our users to give them the best curated experience.
