Leonora Carrington: the Wise, the Mad, the Contrary

by Hanna Karraby

Little is known about Leonora Carrington, one of the most prominent Surrealist painters of the 20th century. Leonora’s paintings showcase a world she created and witnessed around her, her extraordinary imagination is representative of her extraordinary life. This book is divided into three major stages of her life: Her childhood as the reluctant debutante to wealthy parents, her escape to Paris to join the Surrealist circle, and finally, her refuge in Mexico. One of her last interviews runs throughout the book, which I used as a timeline for her paintings. I was heavily inspired by her themes of magic and created a pop up case for the catalog. When closed, the case looks like a normal book. When opened, strong threads lift the book out of its case for the reader to access the catalog. The case adds an element of mischief and magic that embodies the Surrealist painter’s life work.
